WHITE FUNGUS - (New Zealand arts & literature mag)
I don't think that being sent a copy of this cool NZ arts mag was anything to do with Diane being Down Under, but who knows? What I doknow
is that clearly the islands, and Wellington in particular, must have a
very vibrant arts scene, if this is anything to go by. The issue we
were sent (#5, from the turn of the year) contains biographical
articles, articles on artists and photographers, interviews, pictures,
stories, and plenty more. I wouldn't imagine you're going to set up a
subscription at this distance (or maybe you will!), but there's an
interesting website, and it's always nice to see what's going on
elsewhere in this currazy mixed-up world, innit?
My major feeling looking at the mag is "that really is what I'd like Monkey Kettle to look like once we've done it up".
I'm really starting to work on a revamp from #27 onwards, and this is
one of the templates I'm hoping to aim for. The production values of
the mag are beautiful, it sits halfway between the paper photocopy of
Classic Monkey Kettle and the "thick book with spine" look that the
mags at the high end of the market employ. Now I've just got to work
out how I can afford it!
The whole effect of both the form and the content is to convey a sense
that exciting work is being done in NZ, that important arts
practitioners are exploring important arts avenues. And that's a
feeling I definitely aspire to for Monkey Kettle, if I can swing it.
Watch this space. And check out the White Fungus site. Nice one.
